HHS Diaries - Week 5

As summer gets closer, the students continue to improve.  Rachael, an Australian student, has actually passed her final horse on the first attempt.  In 19 years of teaching, that has only happened on a very few occasions.  It has been great to see the advancement of many of these students as they get closer to becoming farriers.

Cody and I are going to a WCB contest in Madison, WI. this weekend.  It will be my first ever WCB, and I am looking forward to it.  Watching Cody has been a lot of fun for me.  Kelly will have Jason Kropf, (a 1997 HHS graduate) come help on Friday while we are gone.  Jason is a great guy and a great farrier.  The class won’t even notice that Cody and I are missing.

The book has had a lot of good reviews in the early going.  No one has had it long enough to give it a serious read, and the students have found a few mistakes for me.  So far the sales have been very encouraging.

The Worshipful Company of Farriers AWCF and FWCF exam in the US is fast approaching the deadline for signing up.  When I talk to some of the guys, they are very interested.  Once they get home, their interest wavers as they see what the test involves.  It is certainly a fast track to becoming a better farrier, but  not everyone sees that.  I hope there are enough American farriers with the skill and courage to give it a go, but so far, only 3 have signed up.  Come on American Farriers.  You can do this if you are willing to work for it.  Everyone that tries will learn way more over the next 6 months than those that don’t.
