HHS Diaries - An Update

Ok.  I am hoping to make this a little bit more of a habit.  If you have shoeing subjects you would like covered, please let me know.  If not, I will tell you a little bit about what is going on in my world.  For some of you, it may be your world too.  I guess we will see who is reading.

We are already finishing the 5th week.  The current Practical Farrier Course students have around 16 days after today to get their projects all done, pass their final horses, and absorb enough knowledge to pass their final written tests.  I feel a bit overwhelmed for them.  But, I have seen it happen year after year, and those that are meant to make it will rise to the challenge.  We set unrealistic expectations for these folks, and the fully expect them to achieve them.

This class has done a huge number of horses.  Scheduling the right numbers is one of the hardest parts of our job as shoeing school owners.  Now that they are really into shaping and making their own shoes, it is slowing the shoeing process down a bit.  The pay off comes when they get to shaping consistently fast and good.  When that happens, we can start doing the horses a bit faster again.

I am headed to Pleasant View Horse Supply in South Dakota to do a 2 day clinic.  Pretty excited to be headed to South Dakota.  It is one of the states that is left on my list of states that I haven’t done a clinic in, so I get to put another pin in the map.  I think I am under 10 states left, but I have to check that out to make sure.  I’ll make a blog about that subject at some point.

Horseowners, be sure you are thinking about your horses out on grass right now.  If they are susceptible to laminitis or founder, this is a dangerous time.
